Immersive Bonsai Program

Yoshio Matsumori

This is not a workshop.

This is a rare opportunity to enter the production field of authentic Japanese pine bonsai and experience the core techniques that shape their future.

Our Immersive Bonsai School is designed for serious enthusiasts and collectors who want to go beyond surface-level learning and understand how high-quality bonsai are truly created.

Program Overview

  • Duration: 1 week
  • Price: From JPY 250,000
  • Location: Takamatsu, Japan — the world’s leading production area for pine bonsai

What You Will Experience

During the program, participants will engage in essential bonsai cultivation practices, including:

  • Pruning Techniques

Learn how structure and balance are created and maintained over time.
  • Field Visits to Bonsai Nurseries

Gain access to professional growing fields rarely seen by the public.
  • Nemawashi (Root Preparation)

Understand and perform the critical process of preparing roots for future transplantation.
  • Lifting Field-Grown Pines (Uplifting / Potting Preparation)

Experience the process of transitioning trees from the ground into containers.

What Makes This Program Unique

The defining feature of this school is access to field-grown Japanese black pine and white pine — something that is extremely rare outside Japan.

In Takamatsu, many bonsai are cultivated in open fields for decades before becoming finished works.

This allows participants to experience:

  • The early and middle stages of bonsai creation
  • The structural decisions that determine a tree’s long-term potential
  • Techniques that are impossible to replicate without field-grown material

Practices such as nemawashi and lifting field-grown trees are only possible in a production region like Takamatsu.

For this reason, wiring is intentionally not included in the program, as it can be practiced anywhere given suitable material.

Instead, we focus on what cannot be experienced outside Japan.

Who This Is For

  • Serious bonsai enthusiasts seeking deeper technical understanding
  • Collectors who want to better evaluate and manage high-value trees
  • Professionals or aspiring growers looking for real production insight
  • International clients interested in long-term involvement in bonsai

Learning Beyond Technique

This program is not only about technique.

It is about understanding:

  • Why Takamatsu produces world-class pine bonsai
  • How historical practices shaped current cultivation methods
  • The mindset required to work with living material over decades

Access & Guidance

All sessions are conducted with direct access to professional environments, with guidance tailored to your level of experience.
